Lauren + Michael's wedding weekend was one of the highlights of my year. They got married on a perfectly sunny Saturday afternoon in the hills of Malibu at Calamigos Ranch. That venue, you guys! The way the light filters in through the oak trees is like no other.
I could go on an on about how wonderful they are, but I thought it would be fun to hear from my couples directly about their relationship, wedding planning, and what was important to them.
This is Lauren + Michael and their beautiful Malibu wedding day.
"Michael proposed on Christmas Eve 2014! Every year, we go to his grandparents house and spend the night so we can wake up Christmas morning with the family. That night right before we went to bed, his mom insisted we open a present near the fireplace. He and his brother went first and opened goofy PJs. Next, I opened an identical box, but it was just filled with tissue paper. I got to the box at the bottom and before I knew it, his brother ran around to the other side of the room, camera flashes started going off, and Michael was on one knee. I was so overwhelmed I can't even remember what he said, but I'm pretty sure I sobbed out a yes!"
Our venue was close to the town we grew up in which made it an easy place for friends and family to get to - we wanted to make sure as many guests could come as possible. Although I did most of the planning, I wanted to make sure Michael felt like it was his day too and he wasn't just showing up! So I made sure to work around his busy grad school schedule to arrange wedding planning days where we could make decisions together on things like cake, music, suits, etc."
Favorite Moment of the day:
It's hard to narrow down to one moment - It was more this feeling we had at the reception. Michael and I have known each other for so long that we have friends from every part of our life together, and it was to special to see our all of our worlds collide, and new friendships forming! Our elementary school friends dancing with college friends, grad school friends chatting with our uncles, it was really this indescribable feeling of seeing all the people we love in one place together and having the time of their lives. At one point we stood off to the side to watch the dancefloor and just relished in how lucky we are to have such an amazing support system, that loves to have as much fun as we do. But if we have to pick one moment, saying "I DO" was pretty cool!
Tips for other couples:
I would advise any other brides and grooms to really think about their guest list - Our only regret from the wedding is that we didn't invite more people! That probably sounds crazy since most people say they wish they had ditched the whole spectacle - but our wedding day was truly the best day of our lives and we wish even more people could have been there to celebrate with us. We had a LONG engagement because of Michael's grad school schedule - over 2 and a half years! - so my other piece of advice would be to never forget why you are getting married. There were many times during our engagement that I would get overwhelmed and frustrated by the planning, so whenever that would happen I would take a break from Pinterest and the Knot, and we would just curl up with our dogs and watch a movie together. Never forget why you're doing all of this and love on each other!
